Speachless...

I am a very, very positive, outgoing and talkative person. Not a lot leaves me absolutely speachless. Well, it happened. I literally did NOT know what to say. I thought it was some kind of joke, but nope. It wasn't.

On Saturday hubby had a business meeting at the Starbucks in Paseo Cancun (local mall - huge). He asked if I wanted to come along, and I of course said I'd love to have a coffee, and I could sit in a corner and read my book.

Now I love Starbucks. If you don't, I don't really care, because I do. I was sooo looking forward to it. I don't order any drink that I can't actually pronounce, in English or in Spanish. All I ask for is a grande coffee in a venti cup. That's it. No biggie...right? WRONG.

How is it possible? I order a coffee and the lady says to me "Sorry, no coffee". So I assume they mean it's not ready. So I ask how long? She says "No, no coffee. We only serve cold beverages". I honestly didn't know what to say?? It's February, the temps haven't been great...It's not the middle of summer in a heat wave? Is she kidding? She's not laughing or smiling. Then it hit me - she was 100% dead serious. With no other explanation. Just told me "We don't serve hot beverages at this location". Starbucks not serving coffee...speachless.

Is it just me? Is it like this all over Mexico? I know it's not like this in other warm climates. When I was in Hawaii last September they served the same cup of coffee as they did back in Canada. I just don't get how "they" got to Starbucks to. By "they" I mean Mexico. I really don't think this happens anywhere else in the world!

Needless to say I still was able to read my book, but sans beverage in hand. I still love Starbucks, and I still love Mexico, but some things I will never, EVER understand.

Bizarre. The Starbucks around the corner from us (in the Paseo del Carmen) has virtually the same offerings as a typical Stateside Starbucks.

I don't know about Starbucks, but I've found that other American brands consistently perform much poorer here in Veracruz...although I would think that in Cancun it would be different than here. Mainly, Pizza Hut, Domino's, Dairy Queen, etc., all really suck here. All have substandard products that are way overpriced. I've started avoiding the brands altogether and enjoy them when I visit the US.

Something's weird. Maybe you misunderstood, because I was at Starbucks in Paseo Cancun on Sunday night (the day after you). I had my usual HOT mocha venti light.

I get the same thing there about once or twice a month.

Maybe some of their machines weren't working on Saturday?

KfromMichigan- No, you are probably right. I'm sure they DO sell it...just not every day!! LOL! No, I'm sure it's a one of!!

Sunshine - I actually was thinking about that!! I'm sure they were just not serving the coffee that day though?!?! At least that is what I hope!!

Leah - I would have to agree with you for the most part. Starbucks is usually a daily visit for me, and they almost always get my drink wrong. The reason being they insist on adding your cream, milk, or whatever for you. I always ask for a little, and they end up putting in way too much. Doesn't sound like a big deal, but at $2 a drink/day it adds up if you don't drink it!!

Gringation - Nope, definitely didn't misunderstand what the lady said. Hubby was there with me too!! I think she just didn't tell us it was for this day only? That they had run out of something? Their machines were down?? We didn't ask, but truthfully because I was speachless! LOL!!

hahahaha! Isn't that the truth!?! I went to Starbucks here in GDL and asked for an Iced Vanilla Latte and they were stumped?! whatever.

I agree with Leah. Everything sucks ass here. Starbucks, Dominoes, KFC, Carls Jr, Applebees, Outback.... EVERYTHING. AND it costs like 100 pesos for near everything. We stopped eating fast food/chain food places and get restaurant specialty food for the same price and better tasting. Support the locals!!!

Oh yeah... and starbucks here doesn't have honey for their tea? wthell?

We don't get a lot of American stuff in our town except KFC and they actually do an OK job. But stuff like this still seems to make me speechless. The other night I was rooting for a US athlete for the Olympics and Issac said come on mama your more Mexican than American now. And I said no way not until things like this stop amazing me.

Refried - so it's happened to you too?? It's not just me!! Not that it's a good thing....

You know what I really hate here? The butter, and the bread. However, Kirkland brand butter is almost the same as back home!!! Bimbo bread? YUCK!!

Amanda - hahaha. Yes, once you no longer find things speachless, and more of a norm...you will then be a true mexicana! LOL!!! Ohh..only a KFC, well, I guess it's all the better as the chains really do suck here... OH and they are FAR more greasy than in Canada or the US. YUCK.

A couple of years ago here in Vancouver I went to a Starbucks and they told me that they were not serving any hot coffee either. Only cold beverages. If I remember correctly it was because all of Starbucks machines are hooked up to a direct water filtration system and it was not working. The cold drinks are made from liquids that are shipped in from other locations.
